Craigslist recently announced that posting ads to the RV and Motorcycle categories will now require a listing fee of $5/ad. If you rely heavily on Craigslist to drive traffic to your RV or Motorcycle dealership, you may be looking at ways to avoid paying that listing fee.
In our most humble and industry professional opinion, we strongly advise that you NOT do this.
Why did Craigslist enact a $5 listing fee for Motorcycles and RVs?
Let’s say your margin on an RV is $1,000. If you dedicate $1,000 a month, you can post 200 ads on Craigslist. If you sell one unit from that budget, you’ve made your money back, plus some. Once you sell two, you’re MILES (get it?) ahead of the game.
What are the advantages of a paid Craigslist Category?
Free Craigslist categories are paired with time consuming efforts to keep your ads in front of potential buyers. If your competitors that are paying to advertise in that space will win the customers, if you don’t dedicate a budget.
Now that RV and Motorcycle categories are paid, you no longer have to worry about…
- Flagging (Ad Removal)
- Ghosting (Ads seem like they’re posted, but they actually aren’t)
- Renews (your ads are now good for 30 days)
When Craigslist made the Cars and Trucks category paid a few years back, we noticed that those dealers who played by the rules and dedicated a budget to Craigslist, saw an increase of 15x in their amount of leads. This happened because it streamlined the experience for the consumer.

LotVantage realizes that it may be tempting to go with a software or marketing company that allows you to spam and post to non-relevant Craigslist categories. It’s best to avoid those practices to uphold the integrity of your dealership and Craigslist.
